Bus stop

| Quick sketch as I was waiting for the bus one night. I'm aware that the perspective is not quite right, but rather than fixing it decided to leave it as is in honour of the original moment. Some things aren't meant to be fixed; some things are lovely because they are wonky. I'm a sucker for nostalgia. |

The bottle
![]() | ||
| Soft pastels |
As part of a reflective exercise for my theories class we had to create an image based on the story of a girl who finds something very precious to her that got lost during a journey through the woods. The story was kept vague so that we could fill in the gaps and personalise it - it was really interesting to note what associations my brain made with each new prompt. The 'woods' turned out to be a mashup between Yala, Horton Plains and something out of a fairytale. The object was based on this line from Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier:
"If only there could be an invention that bottled up a memory, like
scent. And it never faded, and it never got stale. And then, when one
wanted it, the bottle could be uncorked, and it would be like living the
moment all over again."
Pretty revealing, huh?

Post-apocalyptic fairy tales - Sleeping Beauty
They find her buried deep in the ruins of the old city. Her eyes are black and empty. "Looks like the old girl's been powered down since the uprising," says Gretel, climbing over the rubble. "What is it?" asks Hansel curiously. He's heard stories about the old times, of course, but it's his first glimpse into the past and he feels strangely uneasy. "It's a 'borg," says Gretel knowingly. "Looks like an Oracle." She reaches out a hand as if to brush off the cobwebs but stops halfway. There's something about the Oracle that seems sacred and even Gretel - brash, fearless Gretel - stands back reverently. When she speaks again her voice has dropped to a hush. "That there's a piece of history; the beginning of the end." Hansel can't think of anything to say; he ends up staring into the cyborg's dead eyes and imagines he sees a spark of life in them.

| The 'mugshot'. I imagine this story would involve being kidnapped by the Viet Cong. |
